x == y shows that x and y have the same value

x = y assigns the value of y to x

essentialy the author was asking if duncan is whiteman rather than telling him that he now is. 8)

Guys, I make videogames for a living, wear T-shirts advertising "Perforce - The Fast Software Configuration Management System" and own a watch that tells the time in binary and even I think this is getting a bit sad...

No, I like this. Allows the objects to be compared by themselves without trying to define operators for the object type.
Actually I suppose this way allows objects of different types to compare each other?

Steve, if you think this is sad, you're still not enough of a nerd! :pc: :butthead:

Gets out large VB .net programming book, followed by the VBa, VBs, Mercury VB adapt and SQABasic.

Right, I have to put up with these conversations all day without having to read it from you lot! Next smart alleck comment gets this little lot thrown at them :P And no, they are not the nutshell versions....

Now don't force me to go and give myself a hernia in order to carry the C# library :cry:

The one advantage of being a prgrammer, you are never short of stupidly heavy books to throw at people :D

Japan :D http://www.tokyoflash.com/viewwatch.php?cur=UK&id=32&pg=&from=W1&PHPSESSID=ebafa161282dbdea9594fbb1786a918f

*sigh* and just to please the people who still don't think I rank highly enough on the geek-O-Scale, some random drivel...

Code:
class Duncan
{
public:
    void SetName(char* name) {m_name = name;}
    char* GetName() {return m_name;}
private:
    char* m_name;
};

Now you can call Duncan anything you want.

Yuck, some C++ type stuff, time for a Holy War!!!

Right then...

Code:
public class Duncan
{
    private String name;

    public Duncan()
    {
        name = "whitemane";
    }

    public  void setName( String s )
    {
        name = s;
    }

    public String getName()
    {
        return getName(this);
    }

    public String getName( Object whoIsAsking )
    {
        return (whoIsAsking instanceof Duncan) ? "whitemane" ? name;
    }
}

Now we can call him names behaind his back! :twisted:

Perhaps it is a more philosophical statement, rather than a specific linguistic concept? Perhaps the double equivilence of Duncan/Whitemane is a suggestion that we do not truly know where Duncan ends of Whitemane begins... furthermore, it could be argued that Duncan and Whitemane, while existing in the same place in space and time are only able to co-exist while this double equivilence exists. Could the '==' be a significator of balance which must exist for there to be a Duncan/Whitemane entity

Alternatively, another explanation which requires consideration is the positioning and inherent prioritisation of Duncan over Whitemane, as Duncan appears before Whitemane. Is this perhaps an allegorical consideration, in line with an Orwellian precept instigated in 'Animal Farm'? Is Duncan more equal than Whitemane? :jawdrop:
