Hi,

These must be very common qs, but haven't been able to find the answers online anywhere:

1. The rules state casting requires an 'empty' hand, however I came across players at the G who said if you reverse your weapon (so it's held by your little finger and pointing back toward your elbow, not being wielded), then your hand is free for casting. Is that correct?

2. Wearing medium armour without Transcend Armour, can you use Countermagic against spells that target you? (I'm guessing the answer is no, as it's a ranged spell so presumably works by targeting the caster rather than the target of the spell, but just wanted to check)

Thanks,

Tom

1. No.All fingers wiggleable. I accept weapon tucked under wiggle arm is fine :-)
Please note also that carrying a person, 2 empty hands are required (check the rules)

2. You are correct that Counter is a range Ranged spell, even if the Range comes down to zero. Distance does not change spell type.

The empty-hand rule tends to be one of those things that people mis-play in my experience.

Example - I'm fighting with a shield and hammer. I have a spell card in my weapon hand as well as the hammer, as I am expecting to need to counter a spell. A spell is thrown at me and I immediately release my hammer from my main hand, to start casting the counterspell. This seems ok to me and I hopefully catch the hammer between my shield and body, so can resume fighting once I have ripped up the card. The key thing is, at the point where I cast the counter-spell, my hand is "empty"

I've seen people just cast counter-spell with weapon held firmly in-hand and no card ripped. I have seen them reverse their weapon quickly and even in one case, throw the weapon in the air briefly. The latter one is possibly a technically ok answer, but throwing a melee weapon up in the air isn't safe, so don't do it. ;)

Of course - I'm not a ref, just a player, my own opinion etc.

However this doesn't apply to Iron wills, your handy hands free counter option (see your nearest mage for information!)
