Just a hopefully quick question. My character has very little clue as to where things are in Norscan lands as the first time she saw a map ever was last year when Killian showed her a map of Asgard, she's also had chance to have a look at the map in the Fenris Shrine at the spring moot just gone. Given Magdalena's current position, being bad at geography isn't really an option. I know there are maps on this forum but that it would be wrong to just copy them out. My plan at present is to roleplay it that folks in possession of maps give Magdalena some basic lessons on the maps they have and then (depending on whether the rules affect it, I'm really not sure) see about IC trying to copy those maps down for reference and then adding any extra notes as she learns them in character.

Is this acceptable roleplay? And if it isn't and will be all cheating and stuff, what would folks suggest?

It doesn't help that OC I'm really bad at maps and geography too :P

All advice appreciated :)

It wouldn't be wrong to copy them out.
It would be dull to just print them.
(It would be naffl to just print them with the URL on the page!!).
It would be FANTASTIC to copy them to a nice IC media.

I make my nice maps by printing the map bigger, printing them in sections, and then taping them to a glass panelled door and then tracing that (with light behind the glass).
Sometimes I just put A4 'parchment' paper over the screen and trace that (USE A FELT TIP NOT A BIRO!!)

IC maps are good.

In that case I'll try get some nicely drawn out ready for future use. However, I'll still do the roleplay of Magdalena having to learn maps and stuff because I imagine it will be suitably amusing for all involved.

"Killian, can you show me Gokstad on this map?"
"It's right there"
"It's awfully small. I always sort of imagined it bigger. How do we all fit?"
Killian: *facepalm*

"Killian, if that way is North, when turn the map around does it make it South instead?"

Yeah, that should be fun.

If Magdalena can't make the Lord Marshall want to hold his head in his hands and cry by being boneheaded about maps when he's trying to explain troop movements, I'm doing it wrong

Just remember if you have maps do not let any members of military command hold on to them for too long ... only just got my copy of Vetrheim back of Kiff!

Noted. And Kendrick is another one I really should exasperate with Magdalena's shocking lack of geographical knowledge.

Maps are awesome. Especially when you can shock Anders when you can read runes/ish.
I would also like to borrow all maps for my book. :p

I can read runes-ish. But only because Chris sometimes plays a game with me where he writes insults and things to me and I have to translate them. Best way of learning really :D

I find the best way of reading runes is to stand in front of them and shout "WHAT DOES THIS SAY?"

I'm looking forward to watching the map roleplay, Gem.

The Shian could do with a map as well. I wandered over to the lovely Order of Fenris tent when I needed one to discuss with an ancestral being monstered by the equally lovely DM last year (as you do!).
And yes, I am flattering them coz I really should have a better OOC memory for geographical locations, but it doesn't help when cataclysms and earthquakes (or whatever destroyed Albion) keeps moving everything around! :?

If only someone had one of those fancy new 3D printers?!!

Although does anyone here work in printing?
I used to many years ago and had access to some fantastic large format printers (DeskJets etc)
The maps I "mix down" to put on the web page come from a bigger and more detailed resource.

I do have access to an A1 printer in a clients office, but unfortunately the print quality is not great. We tend not to try and print large format stuff anymore.

If it is something you intend to use as a basis for hand drawn work or overlays it should be ok, but if you want a shiney finished print I think you might be disappointed.

If you want to chat over the techniques I used to use when I did the illustrated maps & charts for LT back in the mid 1990's I would be happy to do so.

No I don't. As far as I knew without looking cartography is the one which means you sometimes get issues with maps of a new area, right? At the moment I just need to do the roleplay side so Magdalena can learn the basic geography of Norsca
