I'll do some discussing then ;)

I always wince slightly at LT when singing so many songs using "Gods" as the LT gameworld doesn't have Gods it has Ancestors (and if I had a £1 for every time I explained that during my NPC days...). I assume God/Gods is easier to fit in songs or something, but it bugs me slightly as not really being the correct in-game term, and I think it encourages players to refer to Gods rather than Ancestors in IC discussions etc.

Am I alone on this?

Kate, perhaps you could help the trend by posting a selection of interesting words which rhyme with 'ancestor' ?

Err, Kate, as someone who's written three or four songs with the word "God" in them, I have to admit to an agenda.

I think the fact that LT steers clear of the word is rather pathetic, and would much rather we call them what they are. "Ancestor" is a meaningless title. My grandad is my ancestor. Thor isn't.

I understand the reasons for avoiding it, but we are now in 2004 and we are in England, not Alabama. If the tiny percentage of the population who are churchgoers are unhappy, then that is a pity, but it is not a reason to avoid the issue.

I suppose I have to admit to a certain amount of guerilla warfare in this regard. I write songs about Gods in the hope that one day the LT will admit that this is what they are.

Modern culture is full of elements that abstract religiosity and use it for entertainment. If heavy metal imagery, fashion crucifixes, halloween, "Van Helsing" and a million other things don't warrant a Holy Crusade (in the Daily Mail leader columns) then I don't see why LARP should be so scared.

So "Gods" they shall stay in my songs, even if technically that makes Kasimir a delusionary raving loony IC (no comments please..)

Oh, and it is a MUCH better word for rhyme and scan, as has been mentioned already.

Hmmm ... without divulging in-game background, one of the problems is that LT ancestors are NOT Gods, in the sense that most people believe Gods to be.

Some of them may be very powerful, but the conscious decision to avoid using the word "God" does manage to make people realise that LT Ancestors are not the same as Gods in the majority of fantasy settings.

Of course, it does seem very strange from a Wolves poit-of-view.

Then again, I think there would be a riot if it was decided that Cassius was a God (Hmmm .... flashbacks of a certain Ghostbusters scene ....)

It depends on what you mean by "God". The power levels ascribed to most 'Ancestors' (and I don't mean Cassius here) are roughly equivalent to way Norse gods were perceived. Lots of Norse gods died, for example, and they mingled freely with giants, dwarves, trolls, elves and men. And the Norse creation myth is wonderful mish-mash of mundane silliness; with cows licking ice, people being killed and made into things etc..

"God" as an all powerful, omniscient being is not in the same firmament as the Gods of most of the historical pantheons on which Erdreja draws its cultural influences.

For me, a powerful otherworldly being that resides on another plane, grants powers to its followers on Earth and is immortal (in the sense of not ageing) is a God.

Greek/Roman gods could also mingle freely (in the case of Zeus, very freely :) ) with humans.

Well, on personal preference, I would like to be able to IC refer to Odin etc as Gods, because it better fits with all the Norse background and is, well, just plain right dammit!

I can also see the other side of the coin, in that the word "God" comes loaded with too many preconceptions for some people.

Unfortunately, all rules need to be written with the lowest common denominator in mind.

Sad really, but unfortunately true in the majority of cases.

Hah, ancestors certainly ain't Gods, not to a Labyrinther!
Proper Full Fat LRP Gods we got there, bring you back to life and other Real LRP God stuff. Ancestors? hah, they ain't even God-lite!

Speaking as a diverse LRPer and definitely NOT in any association with the Lorien Trust, Merlinroute or such.

Just a thought...

Isn't LT Ancestor-worship potentially insulting to Japanese Shintoists and African Animists?

if you want to start looking at larp/religion demographics, theres a shed load of pagans/wiccans etc, and they seem to have absolutly NO problem with "unbelievers" walking around calling themselves "the morrigan" or "the cerridwyn" or even walking into a magic circle and calling on the elements

to be honest if the pagans can put up with people ripping off their rituals left right and centre, i really think certain other "focus groups" can put up with gods.

and besides in Erdreja "god" is just a word, it has no history, no preconceptions, its what we want it to be, if you want to call something a god, call it a god, when people say "whats a god" just say "its my own special word for an ancestor"

Perhaps an issue to consider is the theological demographic of major land owners in the middle part of England?
